AP Calculus Review Estimating Derivatives from Graphs
So you may have memorized all of the derivative rules. You might be able to derive f(x) from f(x) no matter how complicated the function is. But how are you at estimating derivatives directly from the graph? As well see in this review article, its all about slope! The Derivative Measures Slope Lets begin with the fundamental connection between derivatives and graphs of functions. The derivative value f(a) equals the slope of the tangent line to the graph of y = f(x) at x = a. I recommend brushing up on the idea of tangent lines first. Here are a few resources that might help. How to Find the Slope of a Line Tangent to a Curve Is the Derivative of a Function the Tangent Line? Example Estimating Derivatives using Tangent Lines Use the information in the graph of f(x) below to estimate the value of f(1). Graph of a parabola with a tangent line attached at (1, 1). Solution Remember, derivative values are slopes! So f(1) is equal to the slope of the tangent line attached to the graph at x = 1. All it takes is two points on a line to determine slope. One point is easy to spot because its also on the graph of f itself: (1, 1). Next we look along the tangent line until we find another point whose coordinates are easy to estimate. Try to find a point that crosses an intersection, because then it will have integer coordinates. For example, (2, 3), or (3, 5), or (0, -1), etc. Im going to pick (3, 5) as my second point. However, if you pick any other point, as long as its on the tangent line, then your answer should be equal (or very close) to mine. Next, use the slope formula (RISE over RUN) to compute the slope of the tangent line. Therefore f(1) = 2. Increasing, Decreasing, and Turning Around Ok, so the first example may have been pretty easy. How hard can it get? Sometimes we have to estimate all of the derivative values! In other words, given the graph of a function f(x), it should be possible to sketch a graph of f(x). There are three things to keep in mind for differentiable functions. If f is increasing on an interval, then f 0 (above the x-axis) in that interval. If f is decreasing on an interval, then f 0 (below the x-axis) in that interval. If f turns around smoothly at a point x = a, then f(a) = 0 (intersecting the x-axis). Example Estimating the Graph of a Derivative Sketch the graph of the derivative of the function whose graph is shown below. Solution First identify the two turnaround points: at x = -2 and 0. This means that f(-2) = f(0) = 0. Then, identify the intervals on which the graph increases and decreases. When f is increasing, we have f 0. When f is decreasing, we have f 0. The graph of a function gives information about its derivative if you know how to analyze it. The graph below shows the original in black and a sketch of its derivative in blue. Notice how the blue curve fits the description of f. The blue curve is above the x-axis whenever f increases. The blue curve is below the x-axis whenever f decreases. The blue curve crosses the x-axis whenever f has a turnaround point. Non-Differentiable Points The methods for estimating derivatives so far have ignored an essential issue. What happens when the function fails to have a derivative value at a given point? Any point x = a at which f(a) does not exist is called a point of non-differentiability. If a is such a point, then there will either be a hole or break in the graph of f at x = a. Three things could cause such behavior. The original function is undefined or discontinuous. There is a corner point in the original functions graph. The tangent line is vertical. Lets explore the three situations in the following example. Example Estimating Derivatives With Non-Differentiable Points Sketch the graph of the derivative of the following function. Solution There is a lot going on in this graph! Theres a vertical asymptote at x = -5. Because f is undefined at this point, we know that the derivative value f(-5) does not exist. The graph comes to a sharp corner at x = 5. Derivatives do not exist at corner points. There is a cusp at x = 8. The derivative value becomes infinite at a cusp. Aside from these important landmarks, theres also one turnaround point, at x = 0. Lets analyze what happens in the intervals between the special points. But what exactly happens near x = -5, 5, and 8? At x = -5, the original graph follows a vertical asymptote. By definition, the function values are approaching or - the closer x gets to -5. As a result, the function gets infinitely steep as x -5. Infinite steepness means infinite slope values, so f must also have a vertical asymptote at x = -5. Next, the corner point at x = 5 represents a very sudden change in direction. Rather than turning around smoothly, the function instantly changes course. That means that there will be a jump in the derivative value when crossing x = 5. (For more about jump discontinuities and related topics, check out: AP Calculus Review: Discontinuities.) Finally, there is a cusp at x = 8. At a cusp, the graphs tangent line becomes so steep that its effectively vertical. That means that the slope is infinite, and again there will be a vertical asymptote in the graph of f. Lets put it all together now. The blue graph represents just a sketch of the derivative curve (not 100% accurate, but close enough for our purposes). Notice not only the odd behavior near each point of discontinuity, but also how the derivative values are above the x-axis when f is increasing and below the axis when f is decreasing. Sketch of the derivative of a complicated function. Original in black; derivative in blue. Conclusion Its important to know how to identify the derivative of a function based only on its graph. Fortunately, the AP Calculus exams will not require you to sketch the derivative curve itself, but may ask you to pick which answer choice best matches it. Use smooth turnaround points as landmarks. Make sure you understand the strange behavior at non-differentiable points. And fill in the details by analyzing where f increases and decreases.

In 2006, the turnover was à £670, 538, 155, a figure that is above the turnover reports shown in 2012 (à £739.7). This reflected a 0.001% increase in turnover value. The gross profit margin in 2012 was 18%, a representation of a significant decrease by 9% compared to 2006 (the gross profit margin was 27%). However, the cash conversion circle in 2012 increased to 139.40 compared to 2006 (133.5). Comparing the performances between 2006 (turnover was à £670, 538, 155) and 2007 (turnover was à £652,257,262); the company realized a decrease in the annual turnover and a decrease in profit before tax. This was a negative growth considering the fact that the company refitted 15 shops, relocated 11 stores to larger outlets, and opened 12 new outlets. In 2006, only 2 shops were refitted, 12 were relocated to larger outlets, and 14 new ones were opened. This explains why there was a decrease in turnover and a decrease in net profit margin by 2.8% and 2% respectively in 2007. Turnover performance in 2008 was better than 2007 with an increase in the turnover by 3.7% (à £677,359,466 in 2008 and à £652,257,262 in 2007). Net profit margin decreased by 2% (19% in 2008 and 21% in 2007). The amounts spent on refitting, relocation and opening new stores in 2008 was less compared to 2007. Only 7 shops were refitted, 15 relocated to larger outlets, and 14 new stores opened. The marketing strategy of River Island Clothing Company contributed to the rise in turnover and, revenue, and profit before tax throughout the period. There is a constant increase in the annual sales revenue starting from 490,176,105 in 2006 to 600,400,000-a representation of 22.5% increase. The rise in stock value also indicates growth in the companyââ¬â¢s operations for the six-year period. Stocks were valued at à £36.5 million in 2006 and à £63.8 million in 2012. From these figures, it is evident that the company has tripled its stock value. The rise in stock between this duration is 73.4%. Value of stock is attributed to refitting stores and opening new ones once the market has been established. In addition, closing several stores that are not performing as required by the board and other stakeholders also helped the company to record better performances. River Island Clothing Companyââ¬â¢s decision to launch new products in the market has also enabled it to improve on its operations. The financial statements and opinions of the customers and the board indicate that the company is focused on improving its performance and profit acquisition in the competitive market of fashion merchandise. The decision to increase its production has resulted to an increase in consumables and raw materials over the years. Firstly, à £2,224,262 million of the consumables and raw materials were recorded in 2007 while à £484,575 of the same materials was available in 2006. To manage the competition in clothing industry in the UK, the manager of River Island Clothing Co. notes that the company has to offer exclusively designed products at fair prices, but of high quality and by ensuring that the customers are provided high level services. Another area of great significance in the companyââ¬â¢s development lies in the debt amounts due in a single financial year. By December 2012, the company reported debt amounts of à £251.9 million. In 2011, the debt was valued at à £194.4 million. The company directors noted that credit risks are the primary contributors to trade defaulters, most of which are categorized under credit card costs used a few days before end of financial periods. The companyââ¬â¢s performance focus based on factors such as trends in costs, margins and turnover indicates that there will be growth in future. The constant fall and rise in turnover also affected the profits. In addition to the ratios used in analyzing the performance of River Island Clothing Co., the ââ¬ËCash Conversion Cycleââ¬â¢ also a better insight in the companyââ¬â¢s ability to ensure that cash is available in its accounts. Cash conversion cycle determines the amount of time needed to sell inventories to get enough cash for other business processes. Looking at the three-year range-that is, 2006, 2009 and 2012-it is notable that the companyââ¬â¢s cash conversion cycle is not steady. In 2006, the conversion was 133.5, 2009 and 2012 had 146.35 and 139.40 respectively. It means that the conversion rate in 2006 was better than the other years within the six-year period. The gross profit margin has also not been steady comparing the figures reported in all the six years. There is a significant drop, probably due to the increasing number of competitors and the introduction of cheaper merchandise. Gross Profit Margin in 2006 was 27%, in 2009, it was 23%, and 19% in 2012. Despite the constant rise and fall in turnover, the companyââ¬â¢s performance in terms of gross profits and sales revenue needs revision. Young Blacks and the Crisis African-American Culture free essay sample
The crawls facing young blacks, also referred to as the hip hop generation, Is one that is multifaceted and contains various layers. Young Blacks today are being faced with a number of challenges within their community and within society as a whole. These challenges include, rising unemployment, racial profiling, high levels of incarceration, the AIDS epidemic, an increasing generation gap, as well as a growing education achievement gap. When coupling these many challenges with the glorification of drugs, violence, money, and the degradation of women that Is often remoter within the hip hop culture, the future of young blacks In todays society remains at-risk and in crisis. Therefore the question remains, how do we address the crisis facing African American youth today? There is no doubt that the answer to this question will not easy. We must first determine, who is this so-called hip hop generation, and look at the history and emergence of this generation of young people within Afric an American culture. We will write a custom essay sample on Young Blacks and the Crisis African-American Culture or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page We must then explore how this generation was shaped. What are the events and occurrences that have shaped this generation and contributed to the crisis this generation now faces? This includes an examination of the society, culture, politics, and pop culture of the sasss and sasss, which the hip hop generation grew up in. Once we examine and understand those issues that have fashioned this young generation of African Americans, we can then begin to explore solutions to the crisis that has negatively affected many of todays black youth.Although the challenges are many, so are the possibilities of overcoming the crisis many young Black people face. The solution Involves the African American community, as well as society as whole coming together to face the challenges this generation is battling. It involves an examination of public policy and a strong look at our government. And finally, it involves a serious critique of the hip hop culture and pop culture that have such a large influe nce on African American youth today. Who makes up the hip hop generation, and who does this demographic consist of?The term help hop generation Is used mostly to describe the generation growing up In the sasss and 1 buffs. Many have termed this group of young people as Generation X. However, when speaking specifically about young Black people, for many the term hip hop generation was much more fitting. One of the first coiners of the term was Baker Kitting, head editor of The Source: the magazine of hip-hop music culture and politics, during the sasss. Kitting defines the generation as those born between 1965-1984, basically those growing up In post-civil rights Black America (Sultana, 2002).Although hip hop music, culture, and politics have changed quite a bit over the almost 20 year span that makes up the hip hop generation, many of the issues and challenges facing this generation of young people have remained consistent. As Kitting noted, individuals may point to different defining vents, but all share a crystal cl ear understanding of coming of age in an era of post- segregation and global economics (Kitting, 2002). Essentially, the hip hop generation consists of Black youths that are aware of the progress that has been the struggle that remains for young African Americans living in todays society.Despite the progress made during the sasss Civil Rights Movement, young Black people are still faced with new forms of racism such a racial profiling and redlining. Additionally, they must deal with large disparities in employment and education in comparison to their white counterparts. The reality of such challenges have left Black youths feeling marginalia and unconnected to society as a whole, as they struggle to deal with the crisis before them. Let us now examine the challenges and issues that have impacted the coming of age and of the hip hop generation, and contributed to the crisis they face.Unlike their parents, who would be considered part of the Baby Boomer generation, the hip hop generation was shaped by events and public policy occurring after the civil rights movement. The segregation an d Jim Crow laws that were part of the coming of age for the baby boomer generation, was not experienced by the hip hop generation. Instead, the hip hop generations coming of age was influenced by more subtle forms of racism and discrimination, such as racial profiling. The emergence of racial profiling can be heavily contributed to the Reagan administrations well known War on Drugs beginning in the sasss. This public policy debacle had a very large hand in birthing racial profiling practices that still exist today. Racial profiling is based on the idea that most drug offenses are committed by minorities (Harris, 1999). Contrary to what many may believe the majority of drug traffickers are not mostly Black. In an UCLA special report Harris noted that, according to the governments own reports, 80% of the country cocaine users are white, and the typical cocaine user is a middle class, white suburbanite. But law enforcement tactics that concentrated on inner city drug trade were visibly filling the Jails and prisons with minority drug law offenders, feeding the misconception that most drug users and dealers were Bla ck and Latino. Thus a drug courier profile with unmistakable racial overtones took hold in law enforcement. (Harris, 1999) This drug courier profile served as the basis for unwarranted stops ND searches of vehicles driven by people of color as well as the unwarranted stops and searches of Black people in malls, airports, and even on the streets. This practice of racial profiling led to a disproportionate number of young Blacks being arrested and imprisoned during the sasss and sasss. A study by the Justice Department showed that at the state level the number of Blacks incarcerated for drug offenses increased 707% between 1985 and 1995, compared to only 306% of Whites (Kitting, 2002). By 1996 62% of drug offenders admitted to state prisons were Black, compared to 36% that were White. This disproportionate number of young Blacks being incarcerated has tremendously affected the hip hop generation in a major way.The staggering number of young Black that are incarcerated, has led to a negative image of crystallization as related to Black youth. Since so many Black youth are imprisoned, it is easy to assume that they must also be the ones committing the most crimes. Thus more minorities are arrested, convicted, and Jailed, feeding into the aforementioned drug courier profile, resulting in more arrests of minorities, and perpetuating the stereotype that most crimes are committed by Black people (Harris, 999). As this cyclical pattern continues, it is also strengthened by the medias unfair portrayal of Blacks as criminals.According to Kitting (2002), a 2001 study found that Being that many Americans depend on the news as a source of information, they are continually being misled about young Black people and their association with crime. In addition to the disproportionately high incarceration of young Blacks, there is also a disproportionately high number of Black unemployed youth, contributing to the crisis among those in the hip hop generation. In the article, The Black-White Jobless Gap, Simms and McDaniel report that only one in three of Blacks between the ages of 16 and 24 have a Job, while only 16% of Whites are unemployed (Simms and McDaniel, 2010).These disproportionate figures can mostly be attributed to the lack of education or achievement gap that exists between young Whites and Blacks. Unfortunately, many young African Americans in the sass lacked the education needed to compete in a growing global society, and unfortunately this cycle continues, as statistics show that 20-30% of Black males drop out of school prior to graduation (Encourage, 1997) Therefore, they were forced to low-skilled, low-paying bobs, which were few and far between. Those growing up in the hip hop generation simply did not have the opportunities their parents had as unskilled workers, having the opportunity to work in the steel, rubber, and automotive industries. By the time the hip hop generation began to enter into the workforce, many of these industries had dried up. According to Dry. Pedro Encourage (1997), studies have shown that Black males in particular are widely viewed as less desirable employees and therefore are substantially less likely to be hired in most Jobs. The rise of unemployment only led o a rise of poverty among many hip hop generations, thus contributing to the growing n ormalization and disenfranchisement of Black youth. As feelings of normalization grew due to racial profiling, the crystallization of young Blacks, and the lack of employment opportunities, many young Blacks began to turn to a life of crime. With no viable employment aspects, many youths turned to the underground drug market as the only way to survive as poverty in many inner cities continued to increase. This led to an increase in gang activity and drug trade. Unfortunately, many African American youths felt they could do better financially in the drug trade than in mainstream society (Kitting, 2002). The street gang mentality spilled over into the prison population of young Blacks. As more Black youth were incarcerated, there was a rise of prison gangs. Soon the difference between Black street gangs, Black prison gangs, and Black youth culture in general was difficult to differentiate, thus contributing to the crystallization of young Blacks.Soon the line was indistinguishable even for hip hop generations, leading many young Black youth to associate criminality with Blackness (Kitting, 2002). This can largely be attributed to the changing face of hip hop music and culture. As hip hop culture evolved (more specifically) rap music, the glorification of gangster life became more and more popular. Aspects of gang and prison life quickly made its way into rap lyrics, and as hip hop culture became more commercialism, this gangster mentality eventually made its way into mainstream society, thus influencing more and more members of the hip hop generation. In addition to rap music and lyrics, the emergence of Black hood films, which perpetuated drugs and violence, were on the rise between 1991 and 2001 (Kitting, 002). Unfortunately, many of these films Just perpetuated the stereotypes already such as Boys in the Hood, and Menace to Society, while praised for shedding light to many of the issues affecting everyday inner city Black youth, are also criticized for the excessive and graphic violence they portray. Many of these movies only contribute to the alienation of young Blacks in society. Seeing violence and crime as the only way of life (as portrayed through these movies) only leads to a sense of acceptance of violence and criminal behavior as part of the Black youth culture. In addition to the crises situations caused by incarceration, unemployment, lack of education, and glorification of violence, there is also a noticeable discord between male and female Black youths that contributes to the crisis among the hip hop generation.Rap music and hood films have not only contributed to the normalization of Black youths from society, but have also contributed to the rift or Battle of the sexes between young Black males and females. Degrading terms such as Hoe, and Pitch, have repeatedly been used to describe African American women in hip hop culture. The film New Jack City is a prime example of the degradation of women, as women in the movie were viewed as less valuable than drugs and money (Kitting, 2002). Women are continually disrespected and degraded throughout the film.Additionally, this type of mentality is ever present in numerous rap lyrics that continually depict young Black women as hoes, creekers, and tricks. Many of the negative sentiments betwee n young Black women and young Black men of the hip hop generation came to a head in 2004 during Seaplane Colleges protest of rapper Knells Tip Drill video, played regularly on BETs late night died program, Uncut. (Watkins, 2005). The video is filled with images of women simulating sex, dancing naked, and overall being degraded by men. Knells Tip Drill video caused an uproar on the campus of Seaplane University in Atlanta. The women of Seaplane staged a protest against the video that gained national attention. Even more importantly, the protest exposed a much deeper rift between young Black males and females of the hip hop generation. It brought to light the divide ever present divide between the sexes as women struggled to fight the women-hating inclinations associated with hip hop music and film (Watkins, 2005). Unfortunately this hatred and contempt toward young Black females from young Black males spills over into youth Black culture, thus adding yet another facet to growing crisis among Black youths. So, where do we go from here? How do hip hop generations begin to reverse the crisis that has affected them for so long? I believe the answer is hip hop. Just as hip hop has the ability to negatively impact image and treatment of young Black men and women, it also has the ability to positively impact the lives of young Black Americans and Black culture in general. It has been argued that music is one f the most influential instruments in shaping the country. Even politicians have turned to musicians to help their political campaigns, recognizing the large impact artists within the music industry have on mainstream society.Hip hop has proven to be a part of that impact and influence found within the music industry. As Kitting noted in his book, The Hip Hop Generation (2002), Rapper Chuck D of the group Public Enemy went as far as to describe rap music as the the Black CNN. Hip hop proved during the sasss that its presence was real and was being felt across America as it came an accep ted and acknowledged as part of American pop culture, and not Just youth culture to a national audience, it also sets the tone for Black youth culture. Kitting, 2002). With such National and Worldwide acceptance, one can only conclude that such a phenomenon has the ability to affect change. Just as Hip hop culture has had a hand in contributing to the crisis facing young Blacks, it can also have a hand in repairing the plight of Black youth culture. As Kitting (2002) suggests in his book, a united front could challenge the rap industry to finally resolve the issue of hip-hops responsibility to Black cultural integrity. Instead of Just a handful of conscious rappers like Common and Queen Latish, more artists must step up their lyrical content so that socially responsive lyrics are as prominent in rap lyrics as those degrading lyrics that perpetuate the racial stereotypes that plaque Black youth culture today (Kitting, 2002). In addition to industry leaders and rappers, Black youth culture and society as whole must step up and begin to hold rappers accountable for their lyrical content, Just as the women of Seaplane College did with Knells Tip Drill video.Rappers and filmmakers will never accept responsibility if we do not hold them accountable for their degrading lyrics and stereotypical feature of young Black people in their music and films. We must also not forget that politicians must also be scrutinized and examined closely as they introduce new forms of legislation and public policy that also contribute to the disenfranchisement of young African Americans. Public policy initiatives such as the sasss War on Drugs and mandatory minimum sentencing that only contribute to the crisis facing young Black people must be criticized and protested against Just as much as degrading rap lyrics.

Martin Luther Essays (504 words) - Apocalypticists,
Martin Luther Martin Luther In this paper I will write about Martin Luther and how I agree with what he did for our religious beliefs. I feel that any person who will stand up for what he or she believes in is best thing you could do. If no one ever stood up for what they believed in then we wouldnt be free like we are today. I will include some quotes from my readings to give a brief description as to why I agree. I would first like to say that when Martin Luther was hit by a bolt of lightning and decided that he would have to enter a monastery, because he hoped that a penitential life would help him overcome his sense of guilt. This makes it obvious that he believes in god and doing right will give him salvation. Therefore when he started to go against the Catholic beliefs, it wasnt because no one else could believe in it. It was because he didnt believe in it and he thought that there were people that believed the same way he did. When in Wittenberg Luther published ninety-five theses, or statements on indulgences that he offered to debate with experts in Christian doctrine. He wrote this because this was what he believed to be correct teachings on indulgences. He felt that it was unforgivable that people should be deprived of their hard-earned money for spurious, worthless promises. I too agree with that, when I go to church and money is being collected, I dont feel like I am giving money to save my soul, I feel like I am giving money to keep the church open. If I had to give money to feel saved, then I dont think I would go to church anymore, because I feel that as long as you believe in god and are a good person that my soul will be saved. After being excommunicate by Pope Leo X, Luther continued to believe what he believed in. He declared I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is unsafe and wrong to go against my conscience. Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen. Luther then went and developed his ideas and shaped them into a formal set of beliefs that influenced most of the subsequent variations of Protestant Christianity. These doctrines have remained the basis of Lutheranism ever since. The influence that this first Protestant Church was to exert on all of European life was immense. The idea that all believers were equal in the eyes of God inspired revolutionary changes in though and society. It justified anitmonarchical constitutional theories, it allowed people to feel that all occupations were equally worthy and that there was nothing wrong with the life of the merchant or even the money-lender and it undermined the hierarchic view of the universe. Lutheranism made people more self-reliant, because independent and pioneering behavior was far from new. History Essays

Plastic Paradise Essays - Containers, Plastics, Packaging
Plastic Paradise Essays - Containers, Plastics, Packaging Plastic Paradise Plastic is having a huge impact on our society, health, and wildlife. It has been around for numerous years, and if we do not take actions into consideration, it will be a tragic loss for us. Unless we take drastic measures to save our planet, and learn from the film "Plastic Paradise" how we can differ from this. Plastic is not uncommon. On the contrary it is normal. Tens on thousands of marine species are killed every year due to plastic waste. Most of this will begin as liter on beaches, streets, and sidewalks. One scenario is when storm water runoff and overwatering flushes them through storm drains or directly to creeks, streams, and rivers, which then lead to the ocean. In marine environments, many animals confuse plastic littering for food. Once plastic is indigested it cannot be digested or passed by an animal so it stays in the gut. This can cause food prevention, and can lead to a very slow painful death. A considerable amount of autopsy's have been performed on animals who have been deceased by plastic. An example was when a bloodless whale was found on the Normandy coast. The animals stomach contained 800 kg of plastic bags. As of a result of this plastic also puts the food chain in a crisis. One example that is effect by this is coral, which is highly beneficial to us in numero us ways. Which are an excellent calcium supplement, treating multiple sclerosis, to treat and prevent cancer, heart disease, and Zavala 2 other chronic health problems. Coral has a crucial impact on assisting doctors with the proper medical care when it relates to help prevent or treat diseases. Not only can plastic be harmful to our environment, but also to our health as well. An example is plastic having chemical migration from the packaging process into the contents. Examples of plastics contaminating food have been reported with most plastic types, including Styrene from polystyrene, plasticizers from PVC, antioxidants from polyethylene, and Acetaldehyde from PET. A few of these products are ones we use in everyday life such as water bottles, plastic bags, receipts (which contains BPA), kitchen utensils, and packaging. Majority of these products we use on a daily basis are harming us. There are several ways using less plastic will be beneficial to us. We can begin by resulting to cloth bags, recycle as much as we possibly can, and choosing products with vey minimal packaging. Lastly, the most important plastic can take up to hundreds of years to breakdown. Different kinds of plastic can degrade at different times, but the average time for a plastic bottle to completely degrade is at least 450 years. Some can even take longer which is up to 1000 years, and releases toxins into the ground. Even for the smallest bottle it seems as if it takes eternity to be biodegradable. This is also leading to clogging up our landfills, and there are even more reasons of why we should band plastic. About 1.5 million barrels of oil are used every year to make bottles, and even more oil is burned transporting them. This film is very informative on how we should take a stand against the use of plastic. We can help and save our wildlife, the environment, and our health if we reduce the use of plastic. Such as recycling, very minimal packaging, and the use of cloth bags, reusable Zavala 3 water bottles, etc. By taking these steps we can make a dramatic change to better our future. Quantitative Nursing and Qualitative Critique Essay
Quantitative Nursing and Qualitative Critique - Essay Example In the light of those evidences the actual purpose of this study is to construct the diabetes self-management education program which uses co-created learning procedures considering the needs of persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) (Funnell & Rogers, 2011). The program should be adaptive in fulfilling the gaps that have been observed in adhering diabetes self-management activates properly. The study purpose has been set to evaluate the DSME program performance at the end through qualitative research methodology. Research Questions The study inquires about the gaps in the diabetes self-management education, it examines, what are gaps in this program which have not yielded proper health care even after achieving knowledge about the program and how these gaps will help in organizing such activities that can make self-management an effective tool for health care. It examines, what are the needs and requirements of persons with type 2 DM. What are the effects and outcomes of this co -created program which have been examined through the qualitative factors of adaptation, program satisfaction and through the self-management activities? The qualitative methods such as focus group discussion and intervention, demographic analysis, knowledge about the program and self-care are sufficient enough to evaluate this co-created learning program. Gap analysis is an effective way of modifying and designing a new program which is not performing to its optimum potential because gap analysis help looking into the drawbacks and faults of prevailing methods and techniques. After analysis it enables the reader to redesign and reconstruct his own opinion and model. The worth mentioning aspect of this qualitative study is that the DSME program has used the co-created learning process... This paper approves that the study used co-creation learning process for participants in their DSME program which yielded significant results in proper self-management among parsons with type 2 DM. so, it is recommended that clinicians or nursing staff or professionals who have interaction with DSME education should prefer self-participation and self-involvement of their patients in identifying activities, barriers and possible solutions according to their desires and requirements. this essay makes a conclusion that this article of qualitative research has provided great deal of knowledge about the thinking patterns of humans as prescriptive methodologies have failed to teach the adherence of diabetes self-management education activities in practical but with the help of co-creation, such limitations have been transformed into strengths and yet the result of only self-managing activities are significant which states that the diabetes complications and problems can be resolved through self-motivation. This article provided extensive knowledge considering the nursing practice because clinical practitioners are usually unaware of this aspect of self-motivation and imply their prescribed opinions without considering the needs and desires of their patients. So, this analysis will help in future references of such events of non-compliance among patients. Qualitative research focuses on exploring issues, after identification it assumes understanding problem and then r esponding to the problem and finally the evaluation comes in line. This aspect of qualitative research will be useful in solving medical problems through qualitative measures in nursing practice.

The Effect of Feminist Revolution in my Life Essay Example for Free
The Effect of Feminist Revolution in my Life Essay The feminist revolution in the 1990ââ¬â¢s may be considered as one of the turning points in world history. From most countries that have been purely patriarchal in nature, the world evolved and suddenly man is no longer the entirely dominant sex in the society. As time passed, women acquired voice, will-power, and independence. The traditional women slowly dissolved and have been replaced by stronger women, in control, and no longer manââ¬â¢s subordinate but his equal and oftentimes his opponent (Badinter, 2006). This part of history has affected not only the women of those times but even the ones who came after them. I am part of the batch that came after the 90ââ¬â¢s women and as a woman, I am grateful for the change that was brought by the feminist revolution. Because of it, I am not merely a shadow of a man, nor a doll that may be manipulated. I am a woman, who has her own mind, decides for herself, and defend it as much as she wishes. If the women of the 90ââ¬â¢s did not revolt against the existing system, which had men dominated in the important aspects of society and perhaps life as a whole, there is a probability that my ideologies today are different. This is more potent due to the fact that I live in a country where Latin culture is dominant and my parents were raised under the strict rules that the culture dictates. This is actually where the feminist revolution has affected my life. It is undeniable that Latin culture dictates that men are the heads of the family. In the days before the 1990 feminist revolution, men ruled over almost every aspect of life with the justification from both religion and the government legislation. As the revolution opened more minds, pressure on branches of the state has forced it to gradually have modifications. Some rules that were not allowed before were given chances and observed for unwanted results. Womenââ¬â¢s rights have been expanded. The effect of this are clashing opinions of both sexes (Htun, 2003). Since I am one of the liberal minded women, the problem that serves as an effect of history in my life is that my parents and I do not quite find a commonality in viewing some aspects of certain matters. First and foremost reason, I was born later than they were. The culture I have grown into is not the culture in which they were raised. My mother is very traditional and my father is very strict on imposing the same rules the he has grown into. Although I understand that generation gap should be bridged rather than widened, this becomes very difficult for me. I am a child of modernity and I go by the rules of it. I please my parents as much as I can. Despite this, there still seems to be lacking. The problem I find is that the changes that were brought about by the feminist revolution were good for some people, but to others, it has destroyed a tradition, a trademark of the culture. For instance, the Latin world, dominated by male suddenly had women with their own voices and will power, even ability to defy. It was good for the women because it somehow freed them of some menââ¬â¢s oppression. However, to the patriarchs of the family, whose life he devoted to keep his lineage together and standing, this is in a way hurtful. Perhaps it may be considered as ego-eccentric thinking; however, others view it as a means of preserving what has been prevailing from the start. The patriarchal families may have oppressed some of the women, but most families owe their stature from this setting. For this, people must be considerate. It should be taken to mind that their actions are surely, also results from another part of history. As I am, my parents are also effects of a past action. As such, I try to understand them. The gap between me and my parents maybe considered as an effect of history. I am grateful for to the pioneers of female revolution ââ¬â for my way of thinking, my female strength and independence. It is somehow damaging to those who believe patriarchy so strongly. However, it should be noted that this same mind that the revolution has freed can understand the grief they may be feeling from suddenly losing total control. This same mind, which the revolution has fought for, can see through their anger. The revolution was not fought for vengeance, it was started for equality. And with that, women understand better. I know. I see. The effect of history to me is not only to be man enough not be oppressed, but to remain woman enough to be sensitive. References Badinter, E. (2006). Dead End Feminism. à à à à à à à à à à Sphere Many people have questioned the existence of intergalactic intelligence such as time travel and aliens. Sphere takes all of these theories and rolls it into one novel. The main character in the novel is Norman Johnson a 56 year old psychologist who is very well known in his field. Norman plays a very important role in the novel, constantly changing the events for the better. Throughout the novel many changes occur to change his thoughts and his characteristics. Norman along with other scientists are called upon to work on a crash sight, but this wasnââ¬â¢t an ordinary crash sight that Norman was used to work on this was a crash sight of a UFO. The UFO is believed to be hundreds of years old. The investigation that they are working on is unknown to the eyes of the public. The main reason Norman has been selected to work on this project is due to his former work on the ULF project. The ULF was a project that gave recommendations for the human contact team to interact wit Unknown Lif e Forms. In Normans report it recommended a team of four an astrophysicist, a zoologist, a mathematician a linguist and a fifth member, a psychologist. The physiologist job would be to monitor the rest of the crew. Harold Barnes is the leader of investigation on the crash sight; Barnes essentially took Normans ideas on the ULF project and adapted it to the crash sight with Norman being the psychologist. à à à à à The group chosen for the investigation on the crash sight is a very diverse group, thatââ¬â¢s what makes them successful. Out of the 4 other members on the crew, Norman is familiar with two of them. The crew consists of Ted Fielding- astrophysicist, Beth Halpern- zoologist, Harry J. Adams- mathematician, Arthur Levine- marine biologist, Norman Johnson- psychologist. Out of those members Norman has had past experiences with both Beth and Ted. Beth is a 36 year old zoologist who Norman had counseled in the past for personal issues. Norman knew Ted thorough the ULF project, Ted also work on that project. Normanââ¬â¢s main purpose is to keep the crew safe and sane through out all of there experiences. à à à à à From the moment Norman found out that there was a UFO spacecraft 3,000 feet under him he was eager to go down there and witness it for himself. Him and the rest of the crew members were wondering where the ship came from and how did it wind up 3,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean.

Dramatic irony is a feature of many plays. It occurs when the development of the plot allows the audience to have more insight about what is happening than some of the characters themselves. Iago is the source of much of the dramatic irony in Othello, informing the audience of his intentions. Characters may also speak in a dramatically ironic way, saying something that points to events to come without understanding the significance of their words. The opening scene is laced with dramatic irony, all of which centres on Iago. Roderigo fails to see that a man who admits he is a self-serving conman ââ¬â ââ¬Å"I am not what I amâ⬠ââ¬â might also be fooling him, and Brabantio is unaware of the aptness of his line ââ¬Å"Thou art a villainâ⬠. Iago has exposed himself very early and we watch fascinated as he manipulates others. In Act I, Scene III, we almost admire Othello's ââ¬Å"free and open natureâ⬠, as Shakespeare states, but we are worried that Othello is gullible enough to be taken for a ride. His choice to place his wife in Iago's care is frightening, although it shows his high opinions of him. We are given two menacing hints about the future progress of Othello's marriage when the senators leave; Brabantio warns Othello against trusting Desdemona, while the first senator tells Othello to ââ¬Å"use Desdemona wellâ⬠. These lines are examples of dramatic irony; hints to the audience about the way the plot will develop. In Act III, Scene III, Othello is under pressure from the moment he enters. He is able to order his wife, although he seems nervous throughout his dialogue with her at the start of the scene. There is acknowledgment in his line ââ¬Å"I will deny thee nothingâ⬠, as we are very well aware that this line is very true. We might feel that Othello is already on the threshold of disaster, even before Iago's words get to him properly. As Desdemona leaves Othello says ââ¬Å"Excellent wretch [â⬠¦] come againâ⬠(see lines III.3.90-2). These lines suggest that Othello will be completely lost if his love is shattered. Note the two words in these lines that hint at the trouble to come: ââ¬Å"perditionâ⬠and ââ¬Å"chaosâ⬠. The audience will be aware of the dramatic irony of these lines. Also found in Act III; Scene IV is packed with dramatic irony. This sad scene focuses on Desdemona. Emilia's purpose in this scene is to remark on what she sees and hears. She introduces the subject of Othello's jealousy, enabling us to value just how much naive confidence Desdemona has in her husband. We quickly learn that we can rely on her judgement; Emilia accurately guesses that it is jealous thoughts which trouble Othello. Emilia is also intelligent in her description of jealousy; ââ¬Å"It is a monster/Begot upon itself, born on itselfâ⬠. Later on in the play we will see the excellence of these words. Shakespeare fills this scene with examples of alarming dramatic irony, for example Desdemona's words at lines 25-9 and 30-1. In spite of the fact that she lies to her husband about the loss of the handkerchief, we are likely to feel much sympathy for Desdemona. She does not appreciate the danger she is in, signified by her words at line 30 and is alarmed by her husband's description of the handkerchief and his repeated requests to see it. Shakespeare's play Othello is a play where dramatic irony prevails practically everywhere. The audience is not just an observer, but a kind of judge one might say, having enough information to evaluate the significance of certain words stated by characters that are none the wiser; and can therefore sit back and enjoy the art in the villain's skills aswell the excellence of Shakespeare at play.

Nutrition, Exercise and Cancer Prevention Essay - 1374 Words
In 2006, Harvard Menââ¬â¢s Health Watch stated that ââ¬Å"About 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and some 560,000 will die from the diseaseâ⬠(Exercise and Malignancy 5). Many individuals and families have fought the battle of cancer for a number of years. There is not yet a perfect cure for this number one deadliest disease, and it is unknown how long it will take to find one. While many risk factors of developing cancer cannot be changed such as genetics, environmental carcinogens (substances that cause cancer), or a certain number of hormones, fortunately, there are several studies that show there are ways to somewhat reduce the risk of cancer. It is not possible to be immune, but by following a nutritional dietâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Cancer always develops the same way; however, there are different risk factors that contribute to the mutation that starts the process. Sometimes these risk factors cannot be avoided, such as genetic s. Examples of genetic risk factors are the BRCA1 and the BRCA2 genes. These genes are normal and are essential for the controlled division of cells. Unfortunately, when a mutation attacks these cells, a womanââ¬â¢s risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer may be increased. According to the National Cancer Institute, 5-10% of breast cancers and 10-15% of ovarian cancers are linked to the inherited mutation of the BRCA1 and 2 genes. However, not all women will receive a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis because of faulty BRCA1 and 2 genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2). Poor nutrition is a lifestyle factor that is considered a risk factor of cancer, and it can be prevented. Oneââ¬â¢s diet plays a large role in their overall health. Generally, one who eats well and takes care of themselves are healthier than one who chooses foods that are high in fats with barely any nutritional value. However, eating unhealthy food once in a while will not cause cancer, but keeping a healthy nut ritional balance is essential.
